"A
prototype for 21st century communication within education."
Jane Davidson AM, Minister for Education & Lifelong Learning

The Welsh Video Network involves the distribution and support of videoconferencing studios and other video facilities to all Further Education and Higher Education Institutions throughout Wales. The equipment is capable of operating via the H.320 (ISDN) and H.323 (IP) networks.

The Welsh Video Network is one of the most advanced videoconferencing networks in the world. Detailed background information about the project is available.

The project is managed by JANET(UK), who are under contract to the Welsh Assembly Government's Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills (DCELLS) and the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW). It is one of the largest UK projects involving collaboration between the Higher and Further Education sectors.

The project was part-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and was the first project to receive ERDF funding via the Objective 1 programme.

During the past four years, 33 new studios have been added to the Welsh Video Network as part of the Welsh Language Videoconferencing Project.  The Welsh Video Network installed videoconferencing equipment in bilingual and Welsh Medium schools across Wales enabling them to offer a greater choice to sixth form pupils.  The equipment enables the schools to share expertise and resources and develop skills in flexible teaching.
